Chapter 35: Letting Down the Old Man’s Kind Intentions

Words : 754 Updated : Oct 12th, 2025
Thinking of that young girl, anxiety stirred within him as he scanned the room, but he didn’t spot the person who was supposed to meet him. Jiang Jingya asked hurriedly, "Son, who are you looking for?" Huo Jingrui frowned. "Where’s the person who brought me here? Why can’t I see anyone?" Jiang Jingya still thought her son was asking about them because of the mission. "The others are still on their tasks. The comrade who stayed to take care of you went out to make a phone call." On hearing this, Huo Jingrui couldn’t help but feel a surge of urgency. That young girl drew them away to save me. But those men... every single one of them is vicious and ruthless. I wonder how she is now? Is she safe? Did she manage to escape? Jiang Jingya kept watching her son’s expression. "Son, are you feeling unwell somewhere?" Just then, footsteps sounded from outside the door, and the person Jiang Jingya mentioned who had gone to make a phone call walked in. Huo Jingrui called out anxiously, "Liu Cheng." Liu Cheng hurried to the bedside. "Commander, you really scared us to death! Thank goodness you’re alright." Huo Jingrui had no time to discuss this. "What about those people?" Liu Cheng understood the commander’s meaning and leaned in to whisper in Huo Jingrui’s ear, "The items have been safely escorted back to the research institute. When we searched the area, we found five bodies nearby, but we’re still confirming their identities." Panic flared in Huo Jingrui, but he quickly changed his line of questioning. "Did it implicate any of the local residents?" Liu Cheng shook his head. "No, fortunately, there weren’t many people around at that time." Not hearing the information he sought, Huo Jingrui’s disappointment was clear. "I’m fine now. You should go and take care of your matters. Just send someone to lend a hand." Liu Cheng also knew there were many things that needed wrapping up, so he nodded in agreement. "Alright." Yunyi returned home and started preparing the luggage for her upcoming time in the countryside. It would be just over a year before she could return. She had initially thought about asking Auntie Wei to come and help clean the house every now and then, but now that Wei Hongjun and his spouse were moving in, it saved her the trouble of asking for help. She organized the winter clothes and quilts—items she wouldn’t need until the colder months—packing them into clean burlap sacks she found. She planned to send them off at the post office early the next morning; this would serve as a good cover for her spatial storage. As for the rest, she packed a somewhat smaller bundle for clothes and the like. With a leather suitcase in hand, that would be about it. Anything else needed could go directly into her space. After packing the items she intended to take, she decided it was best to secure the valuable items in the house in her space. She first went to the room where her foster parents used to live and took the small box her foster mother had shown to the original host. Inside were two small gold bars and a pair of jade bracelets. Her foster mother had said they were, "For the original host’s dowry someday." She didn’t touch the other things in the room, which held memories of the original host with her foster parents. The original host used to sit in the room from time to time. Leaving her foster parents’ room, she went straight to Old Master Chu’s room. She gathered all the items from the secret compartment into her space, then set about tidying the room, planning to use sheets to cover the furniture and the bed. But as she pulled open the bottom drawer of the chest of drawers, she discovered a leather folder. Her mind seemed to fill with a sharp BUZZ the moment she saw it contained a hospital medical record book. When she clearly read the diagnosis written inside, her heart filled with a whirlwind of emotions, and she felt terribly distressed. Old Master Chu must have been planning for the original host’s future for a long time. Perhaps part of the reason for his actions at that moment of danger was also for her sake. She sighed inwardly. What a pity. The original host failed to appreciate the old master’s kind intentions and, for the sake of a worthless man, lost her life.
