Chapter 27: Chapter 27 EgomaniacWe heard footsteps thudding against the ground. We ducked into the field to hide from plain sight. "Caroline, Ember!" a voice rang through the field. Hearing the familiar voice, Caroline stood up. "Lydia, we are here," she called out before making her way to Lydia. I also stood up, making my way towards them. When I got to where Lydia was— "Are you going to join us?" Caroline asked. "No," Lydia burst her bubble. She turned towards me, "Your presence is being requested. Follow me," she held my hand, pulling me along. "Why are you pulling her?" Caroline asked. "And who is requesting her?" "Alpha Damon," she answered, before turning towards me. "Did you do something to offend him or another high werewolf?" she shot me a scrutinising gaze. "Not really," I drawled. My mind travelled back to the incident that happened earlier in the meeting room. Damon had said that I would be joining the next meeting. I thought he was joking. I never knew he was serious about it. My heart skipped a beat as I grew nervous. "Are you sure about that?" Lydia asked again. It was clear that she didn’t believe me. She stopped as we reached the hallway, then she turned, facing me. "It’s never good news when any pack member is called into the meeting room. Most of them that go in end up losing their head—if they’re lucky, maybe just a couple of limbs." Her voice grew worried. Hearing her words, blood drained from my face. I knew I shouldn’t be afraid, as I was sure I could provide a good solution to them. But the way Lydia was talking made fear creep into my spine. ’What if I mess up?’ I thought inwardly. "Lydia, do something. We can’t let her go into the meeting room," Caroline tugged at Lydia’s sleeve. Seeing them worrying about me brought warmth to my heart. "You guys should not worry. Did you forget that I told you that Alpha Damon is my master?" I forced a smile on my lips. "So you can rest assured that nothing will happen to me." seaʀᴄh thё ηovёlFire .net website on Google to access chapters of novels early and in the highest quality. "Are you sure about that?" Lydia’s intense gaze bore into me. I nodded my head, "Don’t worry about me. I will be fine. I’ll see you guys later," I waved at them before turning around, my hands shakily reaching toward the door, the chill from the cold iron radiating into my spine. I glanced one last time at them. I flashed the best smile I could muster at them. Inhaling a deep breath, I pushed the door open. When I lifted my head up, my eyes landed on the elders. My eyes locked with Elder Dominic’s; his gaze made shivers travel down my spine. I quickly averted my gaze before locking eyes with Damon. Damon’s gaze was so cold that it made me flinch. Although his face was mostly expressionless, it wasn’t usually this cold. I locked the door behind me before making my way toward Damon’s side. The elders made walking unbearable for me, as their intense gazes bore holes through my body. When I got to where Damon was, I stood behind him. "We are here, as we have agreed earlier about getting a solution for the flooding disaster. And my pet said earlier that she had a good solution for this problem. Now we will listen to what she has to say. Ember, the floor is yours," he waved for me to come forward. I swallowed. My heart skittered in my chest like a piano falling down the stairs. Hesitantly, I walked forward, standing inches away from the round table. "I... Like I said earlier, if we made a little modification to your plans, it would be enough to protect the land from the flood." I began, thanking goodness my voice came firmer, because my body was already trembling like a leaf before a storm. "I thought you said the plan was a dumb one, so why are you talking about a modification?" Elder Dominic asked with a scrutinising gaze. "Or is it that you don’t have any solution, and you want to talk about modifications so it sounds like you know what you are talking about?" another shot me a degrading look. I knew that they were waiting for this moment to jump on me like hungry wolves—well, they are wolves—who are pissed off because their ego got a little bruised by a little petite girl like me. "I know we all began on the wrong foot, but can you hear me out before you start to judge?" I was so angry at how blind they were because of their egos. "There’s nothing left for you to say because we know that you have nothing useful to say. Just admit that you were looking for attention. Was it the Alpha’s? Did you want to get on his bed?" another said, with so much disdain laced in his tone. "That could be exactly what it is. We have been trying to come up with a perfect plan all these years, and we have been unable to. Then tell me—how could a pup who hasn’t awakened her wolf know the perfect plan?" another commented. "Omegas like her are looking for ways to climb up the social ladder, and they wouldn’t hesitate to sleep their way up," another said with disappointment. My knuckles whitened from how tightly I was clenching my fists, their words like salt on my wounds. I have dealt with arrogant CEOs before. What made them think I would not be able to handle this? I turned to Damon for help, but he just sat like a statue, totally unbothered by how they were roasting me. "It’s okay. At least we could see through her disguise. Not everyone can sleep their way up the ranks," Elder Dominic chuckled. Okay, that was it—the last string that I was holding onto snapped. "And what is wrong with that? Even if I sleep my way up the ranking, what is fucking wrong with that? If I want to change the way I live, I can do whatever I want. However, I’m not here because of that, and neither will I do that. The problem we have now is not me, and it is not even the flood—but your fucking EGOS!" My hand slammed on the table.
