Chapter 76: The Cage is Open

Words : 1191 Updated : Oct 3rd, 2025
Chapter 76: The Cage is Open The victory over Queen Alyssa was absolute. It was a conquest so total, so devastating, that a strange, almost unsettling calm had fallen over my newly expanded kingdom. My remaining rivals, the lesser Demon Kings cowering in their isolated domains, had clearly seen the news. They went silent, pulling back their forces, hoping the new, terrifying monster of Aethelburg wouldn’t notice them. For a week, I was a king at peace. It was the most boring week of my afterlife. I sat on my throne, now relocated to the much more comfortable, if slightly less imposing, crystal throne of my defeated rival, and tried to find something to do. I had my goblins sort my vast, newly acquired library by the color of the book spines, a project that ended in a city-wide paper-cut epidemic. I had my Orcs engage in a "strongest monster" tournament, which they loved, but it mostly involved them hitting each other with large rocks until one of them fell over, which lacked a certain tactical nuance. I was a king. A conqueror. The undisputed ruler of my city. And I was going slowly, existentially insane from the sheer, mind-numbing lack of conflict. "This is it, isn’t it?" I said to Pixia, who was happily cataloging the different types of dust in the Crystal Spire. "This is the endgame. I’ve won the tutorial island. Now I just sit here and manage my resources until the heat death of the universe." "Statistically, my Lord, the probability of you encountering a new, significant threat is quite high," Pixia replied, not looking up from a particularly interesting dust bunny. "Your recent actions have likely been noticed by Demon Kings in adjacent prefectures." "So, more waiting," I groaned, slumping deeper into the crystal throne. "Fantastic." That’s when the System, in its infinite and infuriating wisdom, decided to throw a new wrench into my boring, peaceful existence. My phone, which had been idly displaying my impressive new domain map, flickered. The screen went black. Then, a single, massive, un-skippable screen took over, its text glowing with a profound, world-altering finality. [LEVEL 10 REACHED. EVOLUTION IS NOW REQUIRED.] [CHOOSE YOUR PATH, DEMON KING. THERE ARE NO SECOND CHANCES.] My boredom vanished, replaced by a jolt of pure, undiluted adrenaline. "Locked out again?" I sputtered, trying to access my other menus. Denied. The universe was putting my life on hold for another mandatory character-creation screen. Below the warning, a list of options appeared, each with a small, evocative icon. [VAMPIRE LORD] [VAMPIRE NOBLE] [VAMPIRE ELDER] [DAYLIGHT VAMPIRE] [NIGHTMARE VAMPIRE] "Another evolution," I breathed, my gamer brain kicking into overdrive. "The second class change." "Pixia, drop the dust bunny and get over here," I commanded. "I need your brain. Analyze these options." The tiny pixie zipped to my shoulder, her eyes wide with academic excitement as she looked at the screen. "My Lord! This is unprecedented! I have no direct data on second-tier evolutions! But... I can extrapolate based on the naming conventions and your previous power acquisitions!" We spent the next hour in a frantic, whispered strategy session, breaking down the possibilities. "Okay, [Vampire Elder]," I began. "Sounds magic-focused. More powerful spells. A classic wizard upgrade. Tempting, but my new ’punching-things-into-oblivion’ strategy has been working out pretty well." "[Vampire Noble]," Pixia chirped. "Based on the name, this is likely a charisma and command-focused path. It would probably grant you abilities like your [Reign] and [Coercion], but on a massive scale. You could potentially command a larger army or even sway human populations." "So, the politician build," I scoffed. "Hard pass. I’d rather eat glass." "[Nightmare Vampire]," I continued, looking at the shadowy, claw-like icon. "Stealth. Illusions. Fear effects. A rogue or assassin path. Good for spooky entrances and scaring children, but not great for conquering armies." That left the two most interesting contenders. "[Daylight Vampire]," I murmured, my gaze lingering on the icon of a sun. "Pixia, the implications..." "Are significant, my Lord!" she squeaked. "This path would almost certainly mitigate, or even eliminate, your severe weakness to sunlight and holy magic! It would be the most strategically sound defensive choice! You would be free to operate in the outside world without fear!" The thought was intoxicating. To walk under the sun again. To not have to worry about a hero with a flashlight giving me a third-degree burn. It was the safe choice. The smart choice. But I looked at the last option. [VAMPIRE LORD]. The icon was a simple, brutal, bloody crown. "The Lord path," I said softly. "It’s the Body-specialization, isn’t it? Doubling down on what I’ve already built. Pure, unadulterated physical power." "It is the most direct path to personal combat supremacy, my Lord," Pixia agreed, her voice trembling slightly. "But it would also amplify your existing weaknesses. You would become a true creature of the night, an apex predator in the darkness, but utterly vulnerable in the light." I leaned back in my crystal throne. The choice was clear. My old life had been about being safe. About being sensible. About hiding in the back and trying not to be noticed. That life was over. "I didn’t go through all this trouble, this pain, this absurd, cosmic nightmare, just to be a sensible tourist who can enjoy a nice day at the beach," I said, a slow, predatory smile touching my lips. "I am a king. A conqueror. A lord of darkness." My finger, long and pale, stabbed down on the screen. I chose [VAMPIRE LORD]. The pain was immediate and absolute. It was not a remaking. It was a forging. It felt like my B-Rank body was being compressed, hammered, and folded in on itself, every cell screaming as it was tempered into something harder, stronger, and more terrifying. It was the pain of becoming a weapon. When it was over, I slumped in my throne, gasping, my body thrumming with a power so immense it felt like it would tear me apart. My phone chimed, its calm, digital sound a stark contrast to the storm that had just raged through my body. The evolution screen was gone, replaced by my new, glorious status. [Ragnar Vhagar] Race: Demon King (Vampire Lord) Level: 10 Stats: Body: B -> A Mana: C Alchemy: B Creation: C Knowledge: E New Skills Acquired: [Lord’s Aura]: A passive area-of-effect that instills fear in enemies and bolsters the morale of allies. [Blood Dominion]: Advanced control over blood magic and hemomancy. I read through the list, a satisfied grunt escaping my lips. A-Rank Body. I was a walking, talking natural disaster. But then my eyes fell on the fine print at the bottom of the screen. A single, small line of text that changed everything. [Racial Restriction: Territorial Confinement - LIFTED.] The cage was open. I stood up, a slow, dangerous smile spreading across my face. My kingdom was secure. My power was absolute. And for the first time since this all began, I could leave. I could walk out of my dungeon and into the world. And the world had no idea wha It was coming.
