Chapter 53: The Breaking Point Dominic and the knights did the same, throwing all the magical energy they had into raw bursts of power. The flames, ice, and lightning—magic of every type and element crashed against the invisible wall. Although the barrier itself could not be seen with the eye, the air shimmered with rainbow-colored flashes where their magic struck it, shining even brighter than the sun. Thud. Thud. One by one, those who had used up all their strength began to collapse. There were fifteen mages from the fortress, thirty high-ranking mages who had come from the royal capital to help, one hundred royal knights, and fifty members of Dominic’s own Knight Order from the fortress. Even with all of their full magical strength combined, the barrier still stood firm and showed no signs of breaking. —Is this magic circle a monster? Dominic thought. Is something like this even supposed to exist in this world? It felt like a long time had passed. Or had it not been that long at all? Whether they were from the fortress or the capital, most had already used up all their power. Beside Dominic, Segoy dropped to his knees—his body had reached its limit. Next to him, Mr. Vundo was breathing heavily, panting through his teeth. He, too, was close to collapsing. —How can it be this strong? Dominic’s body was drenched in sweat like a waterfall, and a deep feeling of despair wrapped around him. Is it impossible to break this barrier? Even if they did manage to destroy it, would anyone have enough strength left to attack the even greater magic circle behind it? —Shiao Yi! My Shiao Yi! Let my life become fire! Become a flame that protects Shiao Yi—burn high and strong! A crimson flame shot up and crashed into the barrier. Crack. Snap. Lines of light ran through the barrier, which had been glowing and repelling their magic. Crick, crack, crackle. Snap. Split. And finally, the barrier that once seemed unbreakable reached its breaking point. Ka-shaaan. There wasn’t really a sound. But it felt just like glass shattering. That powerful, solid barrier—finally, it broke into pieces. BOOOOOOM! A wave of heat burst out, slamming into them like a storm. Dominic, Mr. Vundo who was kneeling beside him, Segoy who had both hands and knees on the ground—every knight and every mage—were blown backward like they’d been hit by a violent wind. With the barrier gone, pure magical power erupted straight out from the magic circle. —What is this? Dominic thought. Is this still just a magic circle? It didn’t feel like it anymore. This was no longer something that could be called a magic circle. It felt like the demon world itself had opened its mouth wide. It was like lava erupting from the mouth of a volcano. From deep within the earth, the scorching and evil magical power burst upward. Then, th dark blue beasts from the demon world began to appear slowly, emerging from the swaying mist as if they were bleeding through it. Dominic forced his trembling knees to hold him up and stood, raising his sword. The knights around him did the same—fighting back their weakness, pushing themselves to their feet. But the mages could no longer even stand. They had already used up all of their power. They were completely drained. Could they really close this hole to the demon world in this condition? They were barely able to stand, just managing to fight off the monsters that kept coming through. "Dominic! Get back! Even just a little—get far away from here!" Suddenly, Dominic heard Shiao Yi’s voice. He thought it might be a trick of his ears, but when he turned around, Shiao Yi was right behind him. Shiao Yi was carrying about twenty cylindrical objects in his arms, and above him floating a large metallic box. "If the barrier is broken, I can teleport inside that place. Just leave the rest to me!" "Shiao! What are you planning to do?" As Dominic shouted, Aaron grabbed his arm and him pulled hard. "Captain Dominic, it’s too dangerous here! You have to fall back!" Then Aaron shouted to everyone around them. "Everyone! Get away from here! Run as far as you can! If someone can’t run, carry them!" At those words, even those who had collapsed on the ground began to crawl away. Anyone who could still walk helped those who couldn’t. Everyone started to evacuate. Still gripping Dominic’s arm, Aaron picked up Mr. Vundo as well, and began to run, dragging them both along by force. "Aaron, let go! Shiao is—" As Dominic shouted and reached out his hand, Shiao Yi’s voice rang out again. "You already did your part. Now it’s my turn." And then, right in front of Dominic’s eyes—Shiao Yi disappeared. ... The barrier had been broken, but the enormous magic circle was still active. It was still functioning, still running. Entering a magic circle while it was active was extremely difficult. According to Aaron, it was impossible. He said the entire field was sealed off. Even if one tried to send explosives inside using telekinesis, the walls of red flame that made up the circle’s field blocked everything. Nothing could pass through them. And this was such a massive field. Aaron, the high-ranking mages, and the others had used up all their strength to break the barrier. Now, they likely had no magic left to destroy the magic circle itself.
