Chapter 250

Chapter 250 Perhaps due to a desperate wish, the man who drank the deer’s blood showed signs of improvement the very next day. The pus disappeared and the redness of his skin noticeably diminished. More than anything, the man himself felt much lighter and even sought out the knights on his own. And he didn’t come alone. “Here, I’ve brought my wife and children too. Please help us, knights.” The man’s family had distinctly flushed faces—yet now, compared to the man who only the day before had been discharging pus, they appeared more normal. “Bring them all over.” “Yes, Your Majesty.” “Th-thank you! Your Majesty!” It wasn’t just the man’s family Logan had administered the deer’s blood to. It would have been too much of a burden for him to undertake such a radical initiative based solely on the result of one individual’s experiment. Fortunately, all five individuals who had been given the deer’s blood yesterday showed remarkable signs of recovery. And while searching for the next subjects for treatment, those volunteering needed no refusal. “It’s settled then. This is all for everyone’s sake.” The man’s wife and daughter initially exhibited a serious aversion to the deer’s blood. “Is- Is it really that effective?!” “Yes. You’ve made it happen.” “Th-thank you, Your Majesty!” “Your efforts are appreciated. If we manage to suppress the plague, you shall be honored as the greatest contributor. Expect a reward.” “I am grateful for your mercy...” “Enough of that. I’ve ordered the capture and transport of deer to Raftan. Now, hurry back and analyze the process by which deer blood cures the disease. And create a definite cure!” “Yes, Your Majesty!” Gilbert replied energetically, his face was filled with hope. The unbelievable rumor that drinking deer’s blood could cure the plague spread like wildfire within the village harboring the relief squad. Those who had recovered spread the word with enthusiasm, and once the king even vouched for it, all those who had been suffering, unable to receive treatment from the priests, rejoiced. However, there was one problem. “Your Majesty!” Barging into the King’s tent without warning, Ilyria blanched at the scene awaiting her. “Oh, you’re here, Bishop Ilyria.” The king, already an oddity with his red hair and eyes, was now caked in blood, grasping a deer’s head. And in front of him. Gulp, gulp. “A girl must drink to the last drop to cure the plague! Hurry!” A girl, who appeared to be the daughter, was gulping down a bowl of deer’s blood next to the man who looked like her father. It was a surreal and horrific scene, reminiscent of a painting depicting hell, with the king drenched in blood and the young girl drinking the beast’s blood before him. RaƝǑΒЁꞨ And that wasn’t all. At one side of the tent, nearly ten knights were forcibly extracting blood from deer, and in front of them, a line of citizens were eagerly consuming the blood as if it were from a holy chalice. To the faithful priest Ilyria, it was a shocking sight akin to a slice of hell materialized into reality. “Wh- What in the world is this, Your Majesty?” Her hands trembled, her voice shook even more. But the first to respond was not Logan, but the blood-soaked girl. “I-it feels like the fever is subsiding, Priestess.” The girl, with an awkward smile, had a trickle of blood running down her lip, pushing Ilyria past her breaking point. “Ah!” Ilyria’s pained scream rang out as she dashed out of the tent. Ugh! As Logan was trying not to imagine the unsettling scene that must be unraveling outside the tent, Ilyria returned with her eyes brimming with tears and challenged. “Your Majesty! What is this spectacle? Are you truly having people drink deer’s blood?” Logan calmly responded to the question. “Yes, currently there are only a few deer nearby, this is all we have for now. But soon, when the deer are sent from across the nation, then we’ll be full-fledged...” Basically, turning hell into reality. Ilyria interpreted Logan’s words in that way. “Absolutely not! This is forbidden! Drinking the blood of a living creature is sacrilegious!!” It was the first time Logan witnessed Ilyria so furiously incensed. But Logan’s reply was curt. “If deer blood is a cure to the plague, why shouldn’t I use it? I must save my people.” “Your Majesty! This is a violation of the Temple’s taboo! It cannot and must not be done! There must be another way!” Pale and shaking, Ilyria raised her voice in desperation, but her plea held no sway. “What other way? Aren’t you also on the verge of collapsing?” That comment momentarily silenced Ilyria. Indeed, her paleness and trembling hands weren’t just due to the scene before her; the effects of her third consecutive day of fasting and prayer had taken a more significant toll. Though she tirelessly treated patients more than anyone else, this situation was beyond what she could tolerate as a bishop. “It’s unacceptable! This can’t happen! That is...” Ilyria’s fervent objections went on. The act of drinking the blood of living animals was once a characteristic of demon-worshipping tribes, enemies of the ancient temples, and it was a sin that could summon those demons back into the world. Yet, all she got in return was a scoff. “The legend of vampires. Everyone on the continent knows it. They sucked human blood. But what has that to do with animals?” “But Your Majesty! The temples forbids the drinking of any living being’s blood. It’s considered an act of hostility against the Nine Deities!” “What’s the difference between eating deer meat and drinking its blood? Fundamentally, it’s the same. Think flexibly, Bishop. This isn’t human blood. I repeat, in order to save my people, I’ve chosen the most effective treatment method!” “...I’m truly sorry, Your Majesty. But, please look at this hellish scene! Does this seem a normal treatment process to you?! No priest can accept this!” Ilyria pointed to the blood-soaked corners of the tent screaming, but Logan remained unyielding. “If it’s necessary, I’ll do anything, Bishop. But I won’t ask you to participate in this matter. Fulfill your duty outside. We will do what we can here.” Ilyria seemed on the verge of speaking several times but eventually bit her lip hard and left the tent. ‘Alright. For now, this will do.’ Logan accepted this as an inevitable compromise. However, the very next day, he realized his optimism was unwarranted. “A strike?” He repeated the preposterous word unconsciously, but the undeniable fact was that 120 priests had gathered before his eyes, precisely at the time when they should have begun treating the people. “That’s correct, Your Majesty. Unless you stop this demonic practice immediately, we priests will no longer tend to the citizens.” “Are you telling me you’ll abandon citizens collapsing before your eyes over some long-forgotten doctrine?” Ilyria’s face showed a fleeting sign of conflict at those words. But before she could respond, High Priest Fabian stepped forward with a resolute look. “If a citizen partakes in the worship of demons, they are not faithful, Your Majesty. All priests have agreed upon this.” The priests flinched under Logan’s scrutinizing, crimson gaze, some even quickly looked away. Amongst them were surely those who disagreed but felt compelled to follow the majority. Their faces bore the weariness of exertion. While Logan knew well the priests had worked hard, whether willingly or not... ‘To strike over a mere doctrine...’ A new issue had arisen just when a solution seemed in reach. Sighing, Logan convened the healers and knights. “The trouble...” “Why would they refuse a treatment that’s showing improvement?” “Ah, those stubborn old fools!” “As usual with priests...” The reactions of the others, particularly the healers, were less than positive. Among them stood Gilbert, who had ridden all night back to Raftan, his fatigue palpable. “Your Majesty. We cannot cease using deer blood for treatment. Remember it was almost impossible for the priests before we started.” “Yes, I know. That patients are showing improvement with deer blood. But can it replace the work of 120 priests?” “If we start receiving deer from across the nation, as you said, I believe it’s possible.” “Can you take responsibility for that claim?” “Yes! I promise on my life!” Gilbert and the healers nodded with confidence. Perhaps they even regarded this predicament as an opportunity for recognition. Logan wasn’t oblivious to this fact. But it was also true that the priests’ healing had hit its limits. Logan decided to trust in Gilbert’s and the healers’ determination once more. “Fine. Leave the priests to me. Continue with the treatments!” Logan then pulled Gilbert aside to add conditions. “You’re aware that the biggest issue is the act of drinking blood directly, right? Make a medicine using deer blood as soon as possible. If you do, the priests won’t be able to protest.” “Even if that’s just a blind eye to the issue.” “Temple doctrines always work that way. Providing the pretext to turn a blind eye is why you must develop the medicine. Understand?” “...Yes, I understand.” Gilbert complied, but convincing the priests proved difficult. Rather— “Cease this devil worship at once, Your Majesty!” “Stop the sacrilege, Your Majesty!” The priests even began to protest in front of the King’s tent. In addition, some patients, anxious about the physicians halting their treatments, refused their cure, adding to Logan’s headaches. “I don’t want it. The priests said drinking blood would send us to hell.” “If I’m going to die, I’d rather go to heaven.” Even as pus dripped over their inflamed skin, patients rejected the deer’s blood treatment. And so, the number of dissenting patients grew along with the voices of the ever-increasing priests. “Gilbert. Are we far off?” “I’m sorry, Your Majesty. We’re doing our best, but it’s just not that simple...” Logan closed his eyes at that response and made a decision. Drinking the blood of living creatures was naturally aversive. “Come on, drink up! Don’t you see my face? I’m cured!” Urged by the man, the mother and daughter shut their eyes tight and drank the deer blood. “Ugh!” The young girl retched mid-way, unable to suppress the nausea, but eventually, both of them managed to drink a full bowl each. “Stay here for a while. We need to observe for half a day. Make yourselves comfortable.” As if they could be at ease in front of the king. The man and his family had no choice but to stay stuck in the tent, restless. However, half a day later. The redness on the family’s faces visibly vanished. And it was then that Logan finally felt certainty. “Good! Issue a decree throughout the kingdom! Capture all the deer and send them to the Raftan domain!” “Yes, Your Majesty!” As knights echoed his order, witnessing the outcome with their own eyes, it was the healers who had observed the process with bated breath that felt the greatest relief. “Hahaha!” “We’ve done it! Gilbert has succeeded!” Seeing the healers’ cheers, Logan too could finally breathe a sigh of relief for the first time in a while.
