V slumped back in her seat, grumbling: "Fine... for the sake of the bike, 100,000 it is. So, we're deducting 200,000 for two bikes?" "Right, 200,000." Leo continued, "Then there's the vehicle. We'll need the truck to carry both bikes and the linear frames — we'll have to expand the trailer." Expanding the space was just one part. Since equipment would need frequent adjustments, they'd also need robotic arms, welding gear, electronic fine-tuning systems, etc. The Mackinaw truck was big, but now it was starting to feel too small. He glanced at his own arm—the one he'd traded blood and sweat to get, the "Champion's Arm"—and struggled to imagine what a multi-hundred-thousand setup would even look like. "Actually," Leo thought for a second and said, "Finding powerful, tough equipment and materials is easy. Finding safe ones? Different story." The Maelstrom gang was a prime example. V and Jack immediately understood what Leo meant. Yeah—out on the streets, you could find plenty of cyberware with insane combat capabilities. All you needed was to strap a projectile launcher onto your arm. One shot, and you could blow up most vehicles. The launcher didn't even have to be fancy—it could be cobbled together with rusty second-hand cyberware parts. As long as it could fire, it worked. But with junk like that, failure rates were sky-high. And they weren't broke street rats anymore. A quick glance at the Maelstrom gang told you everything you needed to know. Did those half-mad Maelstrom guys really have more implants than they did? Not necessarily. "The good news is," Leo continued, "we've got a lot of supply channels. Plus, Maelstrom's got a big stockpile. Once Adacado finishes inventory, we can pull from that stash." "Maybe we won't even spend the full 600,000." "After some miscellaneous expenses, we're looking at a total of 1.2 million to split—so 400,000 each." Big boss can't be stingy!" "You—" Jackie leaned against the window, sipping his drink, unconcerned about whether 400,000 was too much or too little. That kind of money... was something he never even dared dream about before. Driving a Mackinaw, drinking ChroManticore, running around with badass cyberware as a legendary boss— he had made it this far. What else could he possibly ask for?
