Chapter 38: THIS IS NOT A REAL Chapter DONT UNLOCK Heather sighed as she read the text from Caius. Come outside the room. She didn’t understand why he was texting her to step out when he knew she was in the middle of preparing for the gala pre-party she had been invited to. Her makeup artist gently brushed blush over her cheek, prompting Heather to lift her chin. "Don’t frown," the girl smiled. "We don’t want your makeup cracking." Heather scoffed lightly. "It won’t crack if it’s not cheap." "I never use cheap products on my clients," the girl replied, her tone perfectly professional. A maid stepped forward from across the room. "Mrs. Heather, which outfit do you prefer?" Heather barely glanced up. "What’s best for a party?" "I’d say go with the green dress," the maid answered, shifting slightly to place the shorter blue dress behind her. Heather immediately caught the movement. "I don’t know," she murmured, pointing. "I like that one." The maid hesitated. "It doesn’t look nice." Heather laughed, taking the blue dress from her hands and draping it over her shoulder. She stood before the mirror, adjusting the fabric against her body as if measuring how it would look before actually putting it on. The moment she did, the fabric hugged her curves tightly, teetering on the edge of being inappropriate—but she liked it. Blue had always been her favorite color. When she finished, she grabbed her purse and turned toward the doorway, nearly bumping into Caius. He stood there, eyes flickering from the dress to her feet—before settling on the dress again. Heather raised a brow, frowning slightly. "Why are you staring at me like that?" "What are you wearing?" His voice was flat. "It’s a dress." His gaze scanned her again. "There’s too much exposed skin." "And that’s none of your business." "Of course it is—I’m your husband." Heather scoffed. "You and I both know this is a pretend marriage because of Alex. With time, he’ll realize why we’ll divorce." Caius didn’t argue further. Instead, his expression relaxed slightly. "Alex and I were having a little cooking thing. He suggested you tag along." "I have somewhere else to be." "That’s fine," Caius said, unbothered. "At least come give him a kiss before you go." Heather nodded, following him downstairs to the kitchen. The second Alex spotted her, his face brightened. "Mommy!" Heather smiled, reaching for him, gently ruffling his hair. "Baby, what are you up to?" She glanced toward the counter, flour dusted across the surface, bowls of batter lined beside it. And some maids standing at the side of the kitchen, ready to clean whatever mess Alex made. She wanted to tell them to leave, saying Alex and Caius should clean their own mess, but she couldn’t. She didn’t want Alex to be spoilt and unable to do things for himself, without relying on maids, like Caius. "I’m making cupcakes!" Alex grinned. Heather sighed dramatically. "And I’m missing that?" Alex nodded eagerly. She ran her fingers through his hair again, pressing a kiss to his forehead. "I wish I could stay, but I really have to go. You’ll save me one, right?" "Two!" Alex insisted. Heather laughed. "Even better." Just as she was about to leave, Alex piped up again. "Aren’t you going to kiss Daddy too?" Heather froze for a fraction of a second before turning back with a smile. "He doesn’t like kisses, isn’t that right, Caius?" she gave him a stare, which meant he should agree, but Caius being the stubborn person that he is turned to Alex, before her. "I don’t mind," Caius interrupted smoothly. Heather shot him a sharp look. "Since when did you like kisses?" she questioned. "You used to say my kisses irritated you." Caius shrugged. "I don’t recall saying that. Actually, I’d like a kiss now." Heather stared at him. He was baiting her. "What do you say, Alex?" Caius continued. "Should your mom kiss me?" Alex giggled. "Yes!" Heather clenched her jaw slightly. She wasn’t stupid. Caius was using Alex to steal a kiss from her, and she wasn’t indulging it. "I’m late," she muttered, turning away. "I have to go." But just as she took a step, Caius caught her wrist, pulling her in for a kiss. His lips crashed against hers, firm and unrelenting. Heather barely had a second to react, her mind scrambled, unable to process how it happened. She should push him away. Yet. His grip tightened around her waist, pulling her closer, squeezing her against him. His kiss was hungry. Like someone starved for something he had long been deprived of. Heather’s pulse spiked. Her body betrayed her, melding into his grip despite her instincts screaming at her to stop. He devoured her lips, deepening the kiss further, and for a moment, Heather let herself get lost in it. Then, she snapped back. Her hands pressed against his chest, hard, pushing him away with force. "How dare you do that without my permission?" Her voice was sharp as she gripped his shirt, fists tightening, nearly shaking. Even in heels, she had to lift slightly to reach his face. Caius raised his hands in surrender, though the smirk on his lips remained. And that was what drove Heather crazy. That expression. Like he was playing with her. Like he was mocking her. "We’re married," he murmured, amused. "It’s bound to happen." Heather’s glare sharpened. "What did I tell you about this ridiculous marriage?" she spoke through her teeth, lowering her voice so Alex wouldn’t hear. Caius, hands still raised, leaned in slightly, forcing Heather to instinctively shift back. "You’re quite hostile," he murmured, tapping a finger against her forehead. "Do you want to take this to the bedroom?" Heather froze. Her cheeks burned in embarrassment. Her mouth parted slightly, caught between rage and disbelief. "Don’t push me," she seethed. "Don’t. Push. Me." Then, she pressed her finger against his forehead, pushing his head, which was still too close to her face, back firmly before turning away. Without another word, Heather strode out of the kitchen.
