Chapter 43: Hunter and Prey

Words : 1056 Updated : Sep 17th, 2025
Chapter 43 - 43: Hunter and PreyThe dungeon was a labyrinthine expanse, a place of complexity and shadow, though not entirely devoid of light. It was a living, breathing entity, its walls pulsating with an eerie energy that seemed to watch and wait. The dungeon was divided into layers, each one deeper and more treacherous than the last. The higher the floor, the closer it was to the surface, and the weaker the monsters that roamed there. Conversely, the deeper one ventured, the stronger and more dangerous the creatures became. Each floor had its own distinct terrain and characteristics, separated by clear boundaries. As Blake stepped into the first floor of the dungeon, he was greeted by a maze of tunnels resembling underground passages. The walls were a pale blue, seamless and solid, yet somehow illuminated by an unseen light source that cast an otherworldly glow over the corridors. Adventurers streamed in from Babel Tower, disappearing into the various tunnels with purpose. To reach deeper floors, one had to descend step by step, floor by floor. Even the most seasoned adventurers had to pass through the first floor to get to the lower levels. The first floor was considered the safest. Not only were the monsters here the weakest, but the constant flow of adventurers ensured that any creatures that spawned were quickly dealt with. There was little risk of a large-scale monster outbreak. Dressed in casual attire and armed only with a standard sword, Blake stood out among the more heavily equipped adventurers. Disdainful glances were cast his way. To them, he looked like a rookie—a lone, unprepared adventurer who would likely meet a swift end in the dungeon. Blake paid no mind to their judgments. He strode confidently into a less crowded tunnel, his senses sharp and his demeanor calm. Moments later, four sword-wielding adventurers exchanged sly glances and followed him in, their intentions far from friendly. After walking some distance, Blake paused as a crisp *crack* echoed through the tunnel. A section of the wall split open, and a goblin-like creature emerged, screeching as it struggled free from the dungeon's grasp. The dungeon was alive. This was common knowledge among adventurers. It wasn't that the dungeon would attack directly, but it had the ability to repair itself. Damaged structures would soon return to their original state. Monsters were born from the labyrinth itself, emerging from walls, floors, and ceilings like chicks hatching from eggs. This was why the dungeon's monsters could never be fully eradicated. No matter how many were slain, more would always take their place. The types of monsters on each floor were generally fixed, though occasionally, creatures from lower or higher floors would stray into unfamiliar territory. But such occurrences were rare. The goblin let out a guttural cry and charged at Blake, wielding a crude wooden club studded with iron nails. *Crack!* With a single, effortless punch, Blake shattered the goblin into pieces. Its body disintegrated into the air, leaving behind a small magic stone that clattered to the ground. Magic stones were valuable. They contained energy and could be used for various purposes, such as powering lamps or crafting tools. They were also the primary currency for adventurers, exchangeable for Vallis at the guild. But the magic stone from a goblin was worth little. Blake didn't bother to pick it up. *Ding!* **Quest Released:** *Kill ten Minotaurs. Quest reward: 50 luck points.* *Ding!* **Quest Released:** *Counterattack the four adventurers tracking you. Quest reward: 30 luck points.* *Time limit: 5 minutes.* The system's mechanical voice echoed in Blake's mind, causing him to pause. The first quest was straightforward, but the second one confirmed what he already knew: he was being followed. Blake had sensed their presence earlier but had chosen to ignore them, planning to deal with the situation once he ventured deeper. The system, however, had other plans. "Come out," Blake said coolly, his crystal-blue eyes flickering with a hint of amusement. For a moment, there was silence. Then, with a series of mocking laughs, three adventurers stepped into view, led by a tall, thin man. A fourth lingered in the shadows, watching. "Tsk tsk, you actually noticed us," the tall adventurer sneered. "No wonder you could hold your own against the Sword Princess. But that power of yours—it's just from that equipment, isn't it?" Their words dripped with mockery. They had intended to observe Blake's strength, but being discovered didn't concern them. They were confident in their numbers. Four against one—what could a rookie like him possibly do? The spiritual gear Blake wore was impressive, they knew. It could absorb and rebound attacks. But even if it blocked one or two strikes, the remaining adventurers would overwhelm him. "Kid," the tall adventurer said, his voice dripping with malice, "hand over those rings, or we'll make sure the goblins have a feast tonight." Blake didn't respond. Instead, his hand moved to the hilt of his sword. *Clang!* The sound of steel rang out as Blake drew his blade in a single, fluid motion. *Shing!* The sword flashed like lightning, leaving a trail of crimson in its wake. Blake's crystal-blue eyes remained calm, almost indifferent, as he moved with lethal precision. *Clang!* The sword returned to its sheath with a metallic whisper. The four adventurers stood frozen, their eyes wide with shock. Then, clutching their throats, they collapsed to the ground, their bodies growing cold as life drained away. "You... bastard..." the tall adventurer choked out, his voice barely a whisper as he fell. Blake didn't look back. He simply continued down the tunnel, his expression unreadable. *Crack!* The dungeon walls split open once more, and a pair of scarlet eyes glowed in the darkness. An eerie, guttural sound echoed through the corridor, sending a chill down the spine of anyone who might have heard it. But Blake walked on, unfazed. The dungeon was alive, and so was he. And in this place of shadows and monsters, he was the hunter, not the prey. ------- Please give more Power stones to this novel.
