"Really?" Ah Man raised her bean-shaped eyebrows, still full of suspicion, but then immediately put on a serious face and said, "Lord, you really don’t have to hide it from me. I’ll help you keep the secret, and I’ll help you figure out a solution too."
If Harano really had that kind of... issue, and healers couldn’t heal themselves, she could make an overnight trip to Kyoto, kidnap a Grand Monk from the Ritsu sect to check him out. Maybe, just maybe, they could squeeze out a kid.
If that didn’t work either, maybe it was time to consider adopting a daughter and preparing for a son-in-law to inherit the family name—like Ningning for example, just kick Asano Nagasuke out and have her renamed Nohara Ningning.
She planned it all out thoroughly, no wonder she self-appointed herself as a family elder of the Nozawa family. But Harano was speechless. He couldn’t just take off his pants to prove to this wild kid that he was a perfectly normal man, so he could only push her away and reiterate, "I told you there’s no problem, so there’s no problem! I don’t drink, don’t smok... eat a balanced diet, work out regularly—my body’s a hundred times better than yours!"
Ah Man was even more confused, asking, "Then what are you hesitating for? Isn’t getting a wife a great thing? And it comes with such huge perks—you’d be stupid not to take advantage! Besides, you deserve it. If you hadn’t risked your life with us, how would Oda Nobunaga possibly just give you his sister? He’d definitely use her to win over some other local powerhouse."
Harano sighed. "I get all that. Will you stop repeating it over and over."
"Then why are you hesitating?" Sure enough, Ah Man was sharp. After asking, she suddenly realized something, "You’re not interested in Oda Nobunaga’s sister? You want to marry someone else? You already like someone?"
Harano nodded slowly, feeling awkward to come right out and say it was Ah Qing, mainly because... twenty-two versus thirteen, an adult and a minor, holy shit, that’s really too much. In modern times he’d be dragged out and shot for five minutes straight.
Ah Man understood his stubbornness; he always cared about all sorts of rules that no one else bothered with. So she started guessing: "Is it Endo Chiyoda? Doesn’t seem like it... Is it that kid Ningning? Doesn’t seem like that either, you’ve already taken her in as a disciple, that’d be impossible..."
She was with Harano all day and had informants everywhere in the territory. She was sure Harano hadn’t pulled an Oda Nobunaga-style sneak attack on any widows, and Harano’s social circle was tiny—he didn’t like going out much anyway, and he didn’t know many women. She really hadn’t noticed him favoring any woman in particular. He seemed the same to everyone—Harano was usually very cultivated, always gentle, didn’t even curse at people.
For example, once a newly selected little maid got so nervous setting the table that she tripped and nearly dumped a soup bowl on his head. He didn’t even get mad. If it had been anyone else, that girl would’ve been beaten half to death if not killed outright, but all he did was smile and go change his clothes—never said a single harsh word.
Harano acted the same way toward Endo Chiyoda and Ningning—equally kind, equally polite. He was only a bit stricter when discussing serious matters or teaching, but otherwise, there was no difference. So then...
Ah Man couldn’t help lowering her head for a peek at herself, her bean-shaped eyebrows squeezing together as she hesitated, "Could it be... me?"
Harano jumped, waving his hands frantically. "No no no no no no no—I swear, it’s not you!"
Ah Man’s bean-eyebrows relaxed, and she let out a huge sigh of relief. Thank goodness it wasn’t her—she was having the time of her life as a family elder, no way was she going to become Harano’s concubine.
Harano saw her relief and also breathed a massive sigh of relief himself. He couldn’t even imagine what it’d be like to open his eyes every morning and see Ah Man—he’d always thought of Ah Man as a bro. Sleeping naked in the same bed as his bro... Just thinking about it made his skin crawl. Utterly terrifying.
He didn’t dare let Ah Man keep guessing—this was getting out of hand. He decided to just rip the band-aid off, dignity be damned, and blurted out, "It’s Ah Qing..."
"Ah Qing!" Ah Man was so shocked her bean-shaped eyebrows practically stood up. "You like Ah Qing?!"
Harano nodded silently. Once he said it, it didn’t feel so awkward. After all, Ah Man was his bro! Of course, if he ever made it back to the modern world and wrote a novel about his misadventures, he’d definitely leave this Chapter out.
"You really like Ah Qing? You want to marry Ah Qing as your primary wife?" Ah Man still couldn’t believe it. She truly hadn’t seen this coming—Ah Qing needed three sticks just to get a single word out, and hardly ever talked to Harano. Plus, Harano wasn’t a chatty guy either. They always seemed to be together, but there never seemed to be anything going on.
Harano figured since he’d confessed, now he had no shame left and admitted honestly, "Not now, I was planning to wait until Ah Qing was of age in a couple years. Of course, I’ll ask for your and your grandpa’s opinion at that time, since you’re her family."
Ah Man ignored that and kept staring at him like he’d grown a second head. After a long pause, she finally scolded, "Lord, I’m telling you, there’s no way—Ah Qing could never marry you as your primary wife! What the hell do you have rolling around in your skull all day?"
Harano’s face changed immediately. All the pressure and influence from Meng Ziqi’s father and his later upbringing evaporated in an instant. He raised his eyebrows, eyes lighting up as he asked, "Ah Qing’s already betrothed to someone?"
"Nope. Back when we were commoners, who’d ever have a thing like an engagement." Ah Man said straight out, "But if you marry Ah Qing as your primary wife, are you hoping to get laughed to death? She’s from a commoner background. If you married her as your first wife, people would laugh their teeth out."
On paper, Ah Qing and she were both household retainers of the Nozawa family now, but that was just her opinion—and with Harano being such a weirdo, the outside world definitely wouldn’t see it that way. Female Samurai were never considered real samurai—everyone knew that. If Harano married Ah Qing as his first wife, to outsiders it would look like he married a commoner as his principal wife. It’d be a massive joke. After all, this was an era that cared deeply about bloodlines and pedigree.
The family name was a visible symbol of bloodline, and Ah Qing was born a refugee. She didn’t even have official residency, much less a family name or pedigree.
Even modern-day Japan still obsesses over this sort of thing. Just dig into the backgrounds of famous Japanese politicians—how many of them don’t have a noble in the family tree somewhere?
Harano obviously didn’t buy any of this and said breezily, "I don’t care what other people think of me!"
Ah Man didn’t buy it either and fired back with equal indifference, "Then whatever, do as you like. You’re the big shot. Go ask Ah Qing and see if she’d be willing to marry you as the main wife! I’ll bet you ten ryo—no, a hundred—she’ll turn you down!"
Harano got up and headed to the door, but when his hand touched the door, he froze and stopped walking.
Damn it, how was he supposed to ask about something like this? Besides, Ah Qing was ridiculously stubborn—if her answer even half-matched Ah Man’s, she’d never agree. He’d certainly lose that bet.
