Chapter 34 – Sound of Shattered Silence

Words : 1139 Updated : Oct 6th, 2025
The week between Miki's explosive debut and Aoi's scheduled release was a tense, quiet storm. While Miki was a constant, cheerful presence on TV and social media, Aoi was a ghost. Kyoko's slow burn strategy was in full effect. There were no flashy promotions, no interviews, no public appearances. There was only the music and the gnawing silence. Kyoko had leaked the demo of "Shattered Lullaby" to a handful of the most influential and notoriously cynical music critics in the country. A slow, quiet buzz began to build online, whispers of a new, mysterious artist with a voice that could "break your heart and heal it in the same breath." Behind her calm, analytical facade, Aoi was a wreck. She watched Miki's soaring popularity with a complex mix of pride and a familiar, gnawing anxiety. "What if I failed? What if my slow burn fizzled out?" "What if, after all this, I was still just a shadow? Not of my sister, but my teammate this time?" Aoi threw herself into her training, practicing her voice until her throat was raw, analyzing market data until her eyes burned. She was trying to control the uncontrollable, to find a logical path to a victory that felt increasingly like a matter of chance. The night of the album release, we were all gathered in my apartment. There was no stadium, no screaming fans. Just us, The Fallen Stars, crowded around my laptop, waiting for the official music video premiere. A nervous energy came from Aoi. She sat perfectly still on the couch, her hands clasped so tightly in her lap that her knuckles were white. The video was a masterpiece of minimalist art. Shot in stark black and white, it featured Aoi, dressed in a simple, elegant black dress, standing alone in a vast, empty concert hall. Her only accompaniment was a simple black microphone. There were no backup dancers, no flashy effects. Just her, her voice, and the crushing, beautiful weight of her song. As the final, haunting note faded, the chat sidebar on the streaming site, which had been scrolling at a steady pace, exploded. It became a waterfall of text, moving so fast we could barely read the words. MusicLover88: I'm literally shaking. Who IS she? SoulSeeker: This isn't a song. This is a religious experience. QueenAoiStan: Move over, Miki-chan, the real queen is here. Eargasm: My soul just left my body. I think I need a doctor. Aoi watched the screen, her expression unreadable. Akane was bouncing on the couch, shaking Aoi's arm. "Whoa, Aoi-nee! They love you! Look at them go!" Miki was clapping, a genuine, proud smile on her face. "Of course they do! She's amazing!" Just then, Aoi's phone buzzed. It was Kyoko. Aoi's hand trembled as she answered, putting it on speaker. "Check the charts," was all Kyoko said, her voice a low, triumphant growl. Aoi's fingers fumbled slightly as she opened a new tab and navigated to the national music chart website. The room fell silent. Miki's "Heartbeat Paradox" was still sitting comfortably at number one, a massive, unmovable titan of pop. But right below it, at number two, with a bright red arrow indicating a meteoric rise, was "Shattered Lullaby." It had been out for less than ten minutes. A collective gasp went through the room. "It's... it's number two," Aoi whispered, her voice barely audible. Her eyes were glued to the screen, as if she couldn't believe what she was seeing. "Refresh the page," Kyoko commanded through the speaker. Aoi's thumb hovered over the screen. For a second, she hesitated. This was the moment of truth. She took a breath and tapped the refresh icon. The page reloaded. And the numbers flipped. "Shattered Lullaby" was now number one. "Heartbeat Paradox" was number two. A stunned, absolute silence fell over the room. Miki's jaw dropped. Aoi had done it. She had dethroned her own teammate, her own friendly rival, the biggest pop sensation in the country, to become the number one artist in Japan. "Holy shit, Aoi-nee!" Akane finally screamed, breaking the silence and tackling her sister in a hug that nearly sent them both to the floor. "You did it! You're number one now!" Aoi just stared at the screen, her eyes wide with a dazed, disbelieving joy. All the hard work, all the envy she had once felt, all the lonely hours of practice... it had all led to this. Her own victory. Her own spotlight. "I... I did it," she whispered, a single, perfect tear rolling down her cheek. She looked up, her gaze finding mine across the room. I gave her a slow, proud nod. She had her kingdom now, too. "Not bad for a rookie," Kyoko's voice crackled through the phone. "The thunder has officially arrived. Don't get cocky. You have a joint interview with Miki on 'Music Today' tomorrow morning. Be ready." The tension of the past week finally broke. The room erupted into a chaotic, joyful celebration. Akane tried to lift Aoi onto her shoulders. Miki started planning their joint-number-one-artists celebration party. Homura, in a rare display of emotion, gave Aoi a shy, happy hug. Chiyoko was already in the kitchen, declaring that this called for a celebratory cake. Aoi, in the center of it all, was laughing. A real, genuine, happy laugh. It was a sound more beautiful than any song. Later that night, after the cake had been eaten and the others had gone home, Aoi sat on the couch, scrolling through her phone. The initial shock had worn off, replaced by a quiet, profound sense of accomplishment. The critics were already publishing their full reviews, too, and they were glowing. Tokyo Music Review: "Tanaka Aoi's 'Shattered Lullaby' is an unbelievable debut. A voice of impossible purity and heartbreaking depth has arrived to claim the musical throne. This is not pop music, this is art."The Sound Scape: "While Aoyama Miki's 'Heartbeat Paradox' was a dazzling lightning strike, Tanaka Aoi's debut is the deep, rolling thunder that follows, shaking the very foundations of the industry. We are witnessing the birth of a legend."Idol Weekly: "Prediction: The charts for the next year will be a battle between two names: Miki and Aoi. Starlight Productions hasn't just found two new stars; they've launched a supernova. The era of the 'Thunder and Lightning' duo has begun." Aoi read the last one, and a small, true smile touched her lips. She looked over at me, her sapphire eyes clear and bright, all traces of her earlier anxiety gone. Her shadow, her doubt, and her jealousy were gone. Now, she was standing in her own light, and it was brilliant.
