155: Chapter 150: High Fall 155: Chapter 150: High Fall Morning. After devouring another serving of pork ribs with soup, rice, a handful of pickled radishes, a bit of chili sauce, a hand-grabbed pancake, and a 200ml cola, Jiang Yuan headed off to work, healthy and hearty. Beyond that, every word seemed almost offensive. “You’re early today,” Wu Jun entered with a serious expression. “Master, good morning,” Jiang Yuan responded, then asked curiously, “Are you in a bad mood today? Jiang Yuan gave a solemn nod, replying, “I see.” That was pretty much the extent of Jiang Yuan’s comprehension regarding “everything is unfavorable.” His dad wasn’t that superstitious; at home, they used the almanac to wipe tables. Wu Jun shook his head helplessly and added, “On the bright side, at least it hasn’t rained today.” “The weather is indeed quite nice, and the sun is good,” Jiang Yuan agreed. Wu Jun said, “But not too good. Under intense sunlight, bodies decompose faster and the stench worsens quickly.” “That’s what you meant,” Jiang Yuan said, shaking his head, “But it can’t be that every time everything is unfavorable, someone dies. Our Ningtai County only has one or two murder cases a year.” “But there are more than a dozen cases of unnatural deaths,” Wu Jun replied. “That’s true!” However, a dozen cases of unnatural death annually doesn’t mean a dozen autopsies are needed. Generally, for most cases, a surface examination of the body is sufficient to determine the cause of death, so there would be no need for an autopsy. The few cases requiring an autopsy aren’t necessarily murder cases either. Of course, when a murder case does occur, it becomes another instance of the ‘stay-at-unit’ package. Knock knock knock. There was a knock at the door. “Come in,” Wu Jun called out. “Doctor Wu, Doctor Jiang.” The person who entered was the familiar Mu Zhiyang. His arm was in a cast, suggesting he wasn’t quite well yet, but he looked remarkably spirited. Rosy-cheeked and bright, he appeared energetic just by looking at him. Mu Zhiyang couldn’t help but smile upon standing in the chilly forensic office. Wu Jun realized, “Oh, it’s you?” “Me?” Mu Zhiyang, puzzled, pointed to his own nose. Wu Jun shook his head, smiling, “Nowadays it’s rare for someone to get shot, how do you feel?” “Not too bad, it’s kind of itchy,” Mu Zhiyang said with a goofy smile. “That’s luck for you. Some people go their whole lives without ever seeing a criminal fire a gun.” “Now I’ve got a great story to tell. Plus, I got a third-class merit. It’s been a profitable ordeal,” Mu Zhiyang seemed very happy. Wu Jun wanted to shake his head but then he thought that a third-class merit actually was quite appealing. In the police workforce, if you don’t move up the ranks while you’re young, it only gets harder later on. For Mu Zhiyang to earn such an honor at his age, especially having been shot, was no small feat. It could actually provide him with some pretty good opportunities. “I owe you one from last time,” Jiang Yuan said, offering Mu Zhiyang a cigarette. Mu Zhiyang said nonchalantly, “You’ve thanked me already, no need to mention it again. Besides, I didn’t take a bullet for you or anything, I was just unlucky.” “Either way, if you hadn’t taken that bullet, one of us would have,” Jiang Yuan lit Mu Zhiyang’s cigarette and laughed, “You’ve had a tough time recently.” “Paid leave isn’t too bad.” “You’re coming back to work already? Isn’t that a bit soon?” “My mom’s been visiting every day, crying all the time, it’s pretty annoying,” Mu Zhiyang must have been really fed up and he couldn’t help but complain, “Hardly do something commendable and she wants me to quit. Ridiculous, isn’t it?” Jiang Yuan and Wu Jun looked at each other but didn’t say a word. If they had been the ones who got shot, their families would do more than just nag about quitting. Thankfully, forensic doctors usually deal more with the deceased. Being a police officer is indeed a job with prospects that are not too conventional. In terms of power, it’s extremely tough and difficult for an ordinary officer to become the head of a police station. In fact, most people don’t make it that far. As for salary, a police officer’s monthly pay is pretty transparent, and where there is money to be made, there’s usually danger—much more so than in regular industries. If there’s any benefit, it’s probably the slight authority that comes with the police position and the social recognition. But the accompanying restrictions and negative opinions might make those inside the force feel even more conflicted. All in all, for an individual in the police force, it’s perfectly normal to occasionally think about quitting. Neither Jiang Yuan nor Wu Jun were in a position to persuade Mu Zhiyang otherwise. A third-class merit wasn’t going to launch him onto a path to great success, it would just make things a bit smoother. Mu Zhiyang knew this as well. After a couple of complaints, he stopped grumbling and chuckled, “I’ll get this cast off in a few days and then it’s back to work. Doctor Jiang, if you need anything, remember to call me.” “Sure thing,” Jiang Yuan agreed immediately. After all, the man had taken a bullet for him. Wu Jun clicked his tongue twice, thinking to himself, might this unlucky kid Mu Zhiyang have had a change in fortune after being shot? Captain Huang,” Wu Jun answered with a troubled expression. “Wanghe Building, high-fall death, on the east side... come in from this position in the parking lot,” Huang Qiangmin gave a brief and clear rundown of the situation. Wu Jun sprang to his feet instantly, “Understood. Wanghe Building.” After hanging up the phone, Wu Jun looked over at Jiang Yuan, who was already preparing his kit like an experienced forensic doctor.
