Q&A – Not a Chapter

It’s been very encouraging to see my story gain such traction, and (mostly) great reviews and ratings.Defiance of the Fall was something I started thinking about a year ago, but only properly started writing in April. I would never have expected it to get the exposure and following at this magnitude, but it’s amazing. I’ve gotten a few PM’s asking about things as donations and Patreon, so I’ve decided to open a Patreon account. I had always planned to do so if the web novel was well received, but rather in a month or two when I’d built up a reader base and page count. But the reader base is already here so I’m jumping the gun I guess. As there potentially will be people who donate money for my writing in the future, I think I need to make a few things clear about the novel and the future so no one will feel tricked. And the whole thing turned out too long for an author comment so I’m posting it separately. I created the following Q/A to clear potential confusion about the direction of the novel. Comment if you feel I missed something pertinent. Q: Is he ever getting off this god damn island? A: Yes. Q: What do I get for becoming a patron? A: Nothing for now. I have only opened up the most basic account so there are no such things like tiers or rewards. I plan to have something in the future, perhaps exclusive other POV chapters, One-Off stories from other parts of the multi-verse etc. But I have no timeline for stuff like this, my focus is on moving the story forward. For now, it is simply wanting to support the novel and me without any expectation of special goodies. What would YOU want if you become a patron? Q: What will you use the money for if I donate? A: Probably a proper book cover if I get enough money for it. I’ll likely put that as a goal on the Patreon as soon as I find an artist I like. The current picture is free to use for commercial use but nothing I’ve commissioned. I’d want a real cover made for this specific novel. If there is left over I’ll probably spend it on Mr. Chubs, my French Bulldog puppy. Q: Will the Release Schedule change in the future? A: It’s possible, to be honest. I will return to university this autumn and I'm using my saved up vacation days and unemployment benefits to get by this summer. But when I start school I will have to get a part-time job. As I gain proficiency and writing speed I might be able to keep the release-rate going even after getting a job, but I might not. Honestly, I can’t really promise anything here. Of course, if my writing would actually provide enough money together with student aid to skip a part-time job then the release rate would rather increase I suppose. Q: Will the style of the novel change? A: I have no plans on changing fundamental things about how power-ups and such will work. That would only happen if I did some major rewriting work. Of course, there are many parts of the system still not available to you that will be explored in the future. There WILL be a change in style sooner or later though. Currently, almost any dialogue is Zac’s inner monologue as he is alone. But sooner or later he will be introduced to people, and more characters, which will change the style of the novel somewhat I guess. What I mean to say is that the novel will not stay a solitary survival story. Q: Will new characters mean multiple-POV storytelling? A: No. The focus is and will be on Zac. There might be some guest-POV’s like Azzun and Ogras has given, but the main storyline will be seen through Zac’s eyes. Q: Will there be R-18 stuff? ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°) Sёarch* The nôᴠel Fire.nёt website on Google to access chapters of novels early and in the highest quality. A: No. While there will be romance there won’t be any explicit content. Neither on RRL or on Patreon. I have no interest in writing that stuff and don’t feel that it would add anything to the story. Q: What about harem? A: No. Zac won’t be collecting jade-skinned kingdom-toppling beauties as though they were Pokémon. I hope that clears stuff up. If there are any other questions regarding this feel free to throw a comment and I’ll try to answer it. No spoilers though. Regular chapter around the usual time, 19-21 PM “Europe”-time. TL;DR: Patreon up, give me money to buy dog sweaters. DotF will have no harem, no R-18, no butt stuff. Things like release rate might change in the future.
