The Xia family was nearly driven to madness when Xia Jiang came knocking.
Inside a private room of a tavern, Xia Shi said with a stern face, "Why did you call me out this time?"
Xia Jiang, feeling guilty, forced a smile and said, "Sister, it’s not that I wanted to drag you into this, but I had no choice. I sold the house and the good land, but since it was an urgent sale, I was forced to sell it at a lower price. Now there's no money left for the Drunken Immortal Pavilion."
Xia Shi replied, "Since the money has been paid back, why call me out for this?"
With a sorrowful expression, Xia Jiang said, "Isn't it because of your useless nephew? He owes tens of thousands of taels to the gambling house, and if he can’t pay, they’ll take his hands! Sister, please save Wencai; he’s the only heir of our Xia family!"
Xia Shi's face darkened with anger.
"Brother, it’s not that I don’t want to help, but you’ve already borrowed fifty or sixty thousand taels from me. How can I still have silver left? I told you to manage Wencai properly. He’s going down a dangerous path, but you refused to listen. Now look where we are!"
Xia Jiang nodded repeatedly. "Yes, yes, I acknowledge my fault this time, but it’s come to this. We can’t really let him lose his hands, can we?"
Xia Shi stood up and coldly stated, "This time, I genuinely have no money. Sell your house to save your son’s hands!"
Having said that, she started to walk out.
"Sister! You can’t be so heartless! Where will I live if I sell my house?"
"I don't care about that!"
"Are you trying to break our relationship?!" Xia Jiang half-threatened.
Xia Shi gritted her teeth; she felt like she was standing at the edge of a bottomless pit!
Turning around, she looked at Xia Jiang.
Xia Jiang's eyes held a mix of pleading and threat.
Xia Shi sighed. Until she figured out a permanent solution, she couldn’t afford to break ties with him.
Su Li was in her room practicing her calligraphy; ever since she was young, she found solace in writing when her mind was restless.
Si Qin entered and said, "Miss, the madam sent someone to say we’ll be leaving early tomorrow for Huguo Temple."
Su Li raised an eyebrow and set her brush down.
"So soon? Is Su Yue better?"
Si Qin walked over to tidy the desk and replied, "She’s probably almost recovered. I just saw Liu Er helping the second young miss take a walk in the garden."
Su Li smiled, "What resilience! Just a few days, and she can walk already."
Si Qin added, "I heard it was the master who went to the palace to ask the court physicians for medicine."
Su Li was momentarily taken aback and sighed, "Well, father still treats her like a daughter."
This statement puzzled Si Qin. "What do you mean by that?"
Snapping back to reality, Su Li said, "You three need to be more vigilant tomorrow. Pay attention to any actions from Yu Qi."
These days, Su Li had deliberately been ignoring Yu Qi, who was getting closer with that side.
Everyone noticed but pretended not to.
"Yes, Miss, don’t worry."
