Chapter 11: Chapter 11: Under The Sun The cold morning air bit into Lily’s skin as rough hands dragged her out of the dungeon. Her legs barely worked. Her body was sore and weak from days of fever and chains. The stone beneath her bare feet stung with each step. Outside, the sky was still dark. Mist clung to the ground and she missed her step and stumbled. “Move,” one of the guards snapped, yanking her forward. Waiting by the path was Victoria, dressed in soft fur and polished boots, arms crossed tightly over her chest. Her sharp eyes swept over Lily’s dirty form with amusement and disgust. “Took them long enough to drag you out,” she said coldly. One of the guards gave a curt nod. “Where do you want her, mistress?” Mistress? Lily’s eyes flicked up at the word. Victoria smiled. “That’s right,” she said, walking slowly over. “You’ll call me that now. Mistress. Say it.” Lily didn’t speak. She only stood there, lips pressed together, trembling. Victoria’s smile faded. “She thinks she’s above everyone. Strip her.” The guards moved without hesitation. They tore the filthy dress from her body, exposing the scars that ran like twisted branches across her back, her thighs, and her arms. Lily didn’t resist. She didn’t cover herself. She only closed her eyes. So many eyes. How embarrassing. “She’s covered in scars,” someone whispered. “Just like they said.” Let them see. Let them all see what she’d survived. Victoria stepped closer, holding out a bundle of rags. “Put these on. You’re going to the fields. You’ll work until your hands bleed, and then you’ll work some more.” Lily took the clothes without looking up. Her fingers trembled as she slipped them on. The fabric was thin and rough, barely enough to cover her properly. “You’ll stay out there,” Victoria said, voice like ice. “You’ll eat last. You’ll sleep on dirt. And if you even dare look at me, I’ll flog you myself.” Lily met her eyes briefly, then looked away. As she turned her face, her eyes briefly caught movement behind the guards. Martha stood at a distance, arguing with another wolf, her voice low and strained. She was trying to follow. “I should be with her,” Martha pleaded, desperation in her tone. “She’s not strong enough—” But the guard shut her down with a shake of his head. “Orders are orders. You’ve been reassigned to the main packhouse.” Lily looked away quickly, heart tightening. Martha couldn’t come with her. She was now alone. Lily followed obediently as they pushed her into the open fields. The dirt felt cold under her feet, the wind sharp against her bare skin. She moved quietly, her hands hanging limp at her sides. Every step hurt. Every breath was labored and painful. Victoria stood nearby, arms folded, watching her with thinly veiled disgust. “She doesn’t even look like an Alpha’s daughter,” she muttered. “Just a beaten mutt.” Lily heard her. She didn’t react. It didn’t matter what she said. Nothing did anymore. “Bianca!” Victoria snapped, turning to a young she-wolf who stood tall and confident at the edge of the field. The girl stepped forward, chin high, eyes gleaming with malice. “Yes, Mistress?” “This one’s yours now,” Victoria said, nodding at Lily. “Make sure she doesn’t forget what she is.” Bianca’s smile twisted. “Gladly.” Victoria’s gaze cut back to Lily one last time. “You will wear chains on your ankles, wrists, and neck. Consider them a reminder that you belong to us now. Try anything stupid, and you’ll get worse than chains.” With that she turned and walked away, her heels crunching against the gravel path. Bianca stepped forward, dragging the chains with her. They clinked cold and heavy in her hands. “Hold out your arms,” she said with a smirk. Lily obeyed. The metal closed around her skin, tight and biting. Around her wrists, her ankles, her throat. She could feel every link with each movement, a dull weight that dug into her bones. Bianca leaned in and whispered. “Don’t think I’m going easy on you because you’re weak. I know who you are. I know what your family did. You’ll pay for it out here every single day.” Lily lowered her gaze to the dirt. “I’ll be watching you. Step out of line, I’ll break your legs. Got it?” Lily nodded. “Good. Pick up that hoe. Start there.” Bianca pointed toward the furthest plot of land. “Let’s see how long you last.” Hours later, Lily’s hands were blistered, the skin raw from scraping, digging, and hauling grain under the harsh morning sun. The air was thick with heat, making it hard to breathe, and sweat clung to every inch of her body. Her ragged clothes clung to her back, soaked through, and dust mixed with her sweat to form a thin layer of grime on her skin. The chains around her wrists and ankles clinked softly as she moved, slowing her down. Her neck ached from the added weight of the iron collar, but she had no choice. She hadn’t said a word since she was dragged out that morning, and no one had noticed that she couldn’t speak. And they punished her for it. A worker bumped into her deliberately, causing the basket of grain she carried to fall. She scrambled to pick it up, only for another to kick dirt into the pile. “She thinks she’s better than us,” one muttered. “Too good for us. Look at her now.” Another sneered, “Should’ve died with her father.” Lily didn’t lift her head but simply got back to work. Because this back-breaking labor, cruelty, and heat, were still better than being in Zayn’s bed. At least out here, under the open sky, she could feel the wind. She could smell the trees. She could hear the buzz of insects and the rustle of grain stalks. Nature didn’t judge her. She was determined to exist even if she barely had the strength to stand. She pressed on. A bell rang for the midday break, and the other workers slowly left their tools and headed toward the shaded tents for food, water, and rest. But Lily remained where she was. Bianca hadn’t called her over. Which meant she wasn’t allowed to stop. Bianca sat in the shade with a drink in her hand, watching with a smirk as Lily toiled under the sun alone. “Keep working, slave,” she said loudly enough for the others to hear. “You’ve got a long way to go if you think you’ll earn a break.” Lily bent down again, her muscles screaming, her vision already starting to blur. And that was the moment Zayn arrived. He didn’t come often, not personally. He had patrols, warriors, and scouts. But something had pulled him here today. A gut feeling. A restless energy he couldn’t shake. From the ridge, he watched. He’d been heading toward the patrol route when he saw her in the field. Bent over. Moving slowly. Dragging her chains. Too thin, too pale but surprisingly still on her feet. She dropped suddenly, knees hitting the dirt. No one helped her. Bianca laughed. But Lily got up shakily. Zayn’s jaw tightened. His wolf shifted restlessly inside him. [You did this], his wolf grumbled. [You put her here.] “Let her work,” he muttered while watching, “Maybe she will earn her place.”
