3: Chapter 3 Meeting the Commander 3: Chapter 3 Meeting the Commander Jack roared at those around him, but all he got in return were even more suspicious glances. Finally, even Hans had had enough, “Use your dog brains to think for once. This guy isn’t from our military camp, we found him over by Desolate Stone Ridge.” Hans’s single sentence was more effective than ten of Jack’s. “Seems like it, yeah. Playing a spy might be a bit far-fetched.” “But it’s not illegal, is it? He’s the one who came over here on his own.” As that person spoke, his eyes still shone brightly, and Zhao Guang couldn’t help but use a backup leaf in his hand to shield himself. It’s just a pity the leaf was too small; it could block the left side but not the right, the top but not the bottom. “Let’s get going, or the Commander is going to head to the rear.” “Right, let’s go, let’s go. I’m so jealous of the Commander. If I were the Commander, I’d definitely move my office to the rear too.” As Jack muttered to himself, he then swiped at Zhao Guang’s butt with the longsword in his hand. “Move it, stop dawdling.” Zhao Guang jumped on the spot in pain. I’ve still got injuries on my butt, is this how you treat the wounded? There’s definitely something wrong with Jack’s brain; you can’t just take your frustrations out on me. Watching the three men leave, the others began to mumble among themselves. “Who would’ve thought, Jack looked pretty decent, but he’s quite the player.” “Exactly, it’s too terrifying. I wouldn’t want to get hurt.” As he spoke, a soldier felt his own butt, thinking of something that brought a perverted smile to his face. Some quickly retreated, distancing themselves from these people, while many others wore the same smile. Zhao Guang followed the two men as they walked along, shortly arriving at the military camp. The camp looked very rudimentary, mostly made of wood. Behind them were not the tents he imagined but rather wooden houses. Only, on the surface of these wooden houses, a thick layer of mud had been applied. In some places, the dried mud cracked, revealing the wooden structure inside. What caught Zhao Guang’s attention the most were not these wooden houses, but the smiling faces of some soldiers as they looked at him, and their pointing and commenting gestures. I haven’t stumbled into a camp of homosexuals, have I? Zhao Guang’s eyes grew more and more filled with terror. “Ow, what the hell?” In his terror, Zhao Guang was bumped and suddenly screamed. His unexpected shout startled Jack behind him, causing Jack’s face to look even uglier. “We’re here. Put down your weapons and come with us.” “I don’t have any weapons, you all know that.” “Then just follow us.” Jack and Hans set down their weapons and then had the people in front of the house search them. When it was Zhao Guang’s turn, his face was full of reluctance and grievance. “I don’t have anywhere to hide weapons, let it be, wait, you can’t touch that...” The guard unceremoniously completed the most thorough search, then closed the leaf for Zhao Guang. “Pretty big, not bad, not bad. Following the two men further in, Zhao Guang finally took in the decor inside these wooden structures. Although it was just a wooden house, the interior decoration wasn’t half bad. The walls around were covered with white cloth, giving them a grand appearance. Yes, this was white cloth, though it was nearly grey now, but some areas still showed its original color. Just as he arrived at the last room, Zhao Guang heard someone arguing loudly inside. “I’m doing all this for our future, we can’t go on like this, otherwise, we’ll get nowhere and be stuck in this place forever.” “My status is already high, and all I need is to wait for my rotation back. Adventures are not suited for us.” “And what if those damned beastmen attack, are we supposed to just sit here and wait for death? You’ve never beaten me since we were kids.” “Damn you, Ocoro, you really think I can’t beat you.” The noise of their quarrel grew louder until a cough finally subdued their voices. “Commander, Hans requests an audience; he says he has encountered a strange person at Desolate Stone Ridge.” A middle-aged man with an impeccably groomed mustache spoke up, but he automatically ignored Jack. Jack was well known as the idiot of their military camp, sometimes it was better to just ignore him. Looking at the open door, Zhao Guang began to take in the scene inside. The person who had just spoken was swiftly dealing with various documents on the table while talking. However, judging by the seat off to the side, this likely wasn’t the Commander. The one sitting in the middle looked quite imposing, but his face was a bit red, perhaps from anger. Next to him, a fat man, similarly meticulous in his attire, was eyeing Zhao Guang with a look of scorn and disdain, as if looking at something filthy. “This is the person you brought back from Desolate Stone Ridge? Don’t you think, instead of smugglers, who else would be out there? If you ask me, we should just arrest him and throw him in jail.” The fat man began shouting loudly, his voice revealing that he must be Ocoro. “Shut your mouth if you don’t want to listen, leave. Now, tell us, what is your origin.” Yars looked Zhao Guang over, his skin and features were delicate, more pampered than most nobles’, suggesting he was no ordinary person. Jack immediately said, “He claims he appeared suddenly; it could be related to mages.” “Mages? Look at him, not a trace of Magic Power on his body.” Ocoro squinted his eyes until they were mere slits. He wasn’t afraid of the Commander’s words in the slightest. “Well, it seems like that, I accidentally came here, but I think I can still be of use to you. Judging by your state, you must be lacking in supplies, right?” Zhao Guang just wanted to get back quickly. After glancing at the food on the table, he had a rough idea of the situation.
